Getting Started

The basics of Planning and Organizing for team based improvement -- the first two steps of the PiT Improvement Model. Topics covered include determing the performance gap, why use teams, the two critical purposes of any improvement effort and the real world of team based improvement initiatives.

Tool Guides in this module include The Team Charter, The System Definition Diagram and the Team Norms Template. Additional Tool Guides that can be included as part of the module are the GANTT chart, PERT, the Role and Responsibility Matrix.

Performance Improvement Basics

The theory and experience of making improvements happen. This module focuses on topics such as systems

thinking, the four critical process concepts (including variation), the basics of performance measurement (definition of characteristics), the 7-Step Improvement Model and the basic Improvement Method highlighted in the PiT. The intent of this module is to provide particpants with a clear roadmap of what the focus of improvement is (the system or process) and how to make the improvement happen.

Some specific tools identified here are the Kano model of the value -- performance relationship.

Introduction to Statistical Thinking & Methods

Introduction to Statistical Thinking and Methods is our most popular training module. Particpants are re-introduced to some basic process concepts as well as the importance of numerical data in analyzing and improving performance. From here the 7-basic statistical tools are introduced and two of these, the Run Chart and the XmR Control Chart, are selected for specific study and application.

This is the ideal training module for organizations of all stripes currently starting or struggling with performance measurement.

Statistical Methods

Statistical Methods is a module designed to be delivered over 4 days in two, two day sessions. The first two days covers tools designed to assess the level of performance and establish process capability. The second two days concerns itself with the analysis of cause and effect -- identifying sources of variation within the process design.

Tools covered include:

X-Bar, R Charts

Attribute Control Charts (n, np, c, u)

Histograms

Capability Analysis (including Cp, Cpk, DNS, ST, DPMO)

Pareto Charts

Box and Whisker and Dot Plots

Scatter Diagrams

Field Experiements and analysis.

This module is perfect for organizations currently engaged in improvement efforts and where enhanced performance measurement and analysis kills would prove useful.

Working With Qualitative Data

Working with qualitative data is fast becoming our most popular module. Organizations gather mountains of qualitative data: customer comments and complaints, employee feedback, suggestions for improvement and customer requirements or demands. Yet more often than not, this information is wasted -- more often read for entertainment value than improvement.

Working with qualittaive data shows teams how to effectively gather qualitative data, organize it, summarize it and make the appropriate comparisons to make qualitative data meaningful.

Using Visual Models

Using Visual Models is another of our most popular modules and is designed to run over two days. The basic tools of depiction are covered including:

System Definition Diagrams

Block Diagrams

Flowcharts

Cause and Effect Diagrams

as well as all the various supporting tools and analytical techniques. This module provides teams with a great range of visual tools designed to get teams on the road to understanding and improving the processes at work.

Making Decisions

Making Decisions is module that reviews the range of processes available to teams to facilitate and improve decsion timliness and quality. All the decision tools are covered including:

Preference Based Decision Methods

Voting

Rating

Ranking

Evaluative Tools and Techniques

Pugh Concept Evaluation

Analytical Matrices

Criteria Evaluation

Analytical Hierarchy Process

Managing Projects

This modules deals with management and planning tools and is designed to give performance improvement teams the basic skills and supporting tools to manage improvement projects successfully. Some of the specific topics include:

The Purpose of Project Management

Helpfull Processes

Force Field Analysis

Responsibility Charting

GANTT Charting

PERT

Relationship Diagrams and

Matrix Diagrams

Building a Project Management System

Deployment Charting

Deployment charting is all about alignment -- aligning organizational activity and/or design to customer requirements or aligning organizational activities with broader corporate goals and objectives. They are a fundamnetal tool used in advanced strategic and business planning activities (Hoshin Planning) as well as Quality Function Deploymnet (QFD).

This module covers basic deployment charting applications, chart preperation and analysis, interpretation and typical applications of deployment charts.
